Carpet is the warmest, quietest floor you can put in a bedroom or a basement family room. It softens footsteps on upper floors, which matters in Kitchener's many side-split and back-split homes where bedrooms sit directly over living space.
It also costs less per square foot than most hard floors, which is why landlords still use it in bedrooms. For wet areas, entries and kitchens we recommend vinyl or tile instead.
Neighbourhoods such as Forest Heights, Country Hills and Laurentian Hills have plenty of 1970s and 1980s split-level homes. That means several short flights of stairs, often with landings and open sides.
A waterfall install runs the carpet over each nosing and straight down the riser, which is quicker and suits most homes. Cap-and-band, sometimes called Hollywood style, wraps each tread and nosing separately for a tailored look that shows off the stair shape.
We plan the cut so pile runs down the stairs and no seam lands on a tread, where wear would open it. Landings are cut from the same roll so the colour matches.

A basement slab is cold and can hold moisture, so we test it before any carpet goes down. If readings are high, we tell you, and carpet tile or vinyl may be the better call.
On a dry slab, we fasten tack strip with concrete nails or adhesive, lay a moisture-resistant pad and power-stretch the carpet to the walls. Older Kitchener basements with painted or patched slabs get extra prep so the tack strip holds.
Nylon resists crushing best and suits stairs and hallways. Polyester is softer and stain-resistant at a lower price, and wool is the premium natural choice.
The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends residential cushion no thicker than 7/16 inch, and we typically use 8-pound rebond for bedrooms and stairs. A thick, soft pad feels nice in the showroom but lets carpet flex and wrinkle.
We use a power stretcher on every room larger than a closet. A knee kicker alone can't get broadloom tight enough to stay flat for years.
